Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) was recognized by The National Association of Counties (NACo) for development of the highly innovated Road Information Tool (RIT). This tool was created through the collaboration of MCDOT and the Maricopa County GIS team. Using high tech mapping software, the two were able to create a map system that displays organized data from multiple sources. MCDOT Director, Jennifer Toth, found that there was a need to have one centralized location with information that is not only accessible by MCDOT’s staff but also for stakeholders.

“One of the biggest benefits of the Road Information Tool, is the ability to have one centralized location for everyone to access the information they need about our roadways,” said MCDOT Director Jennifer Toth. “By making this information available to employees and the public, it enables MCDOT to continually improve communication amongst the public, key stakeholders and to maintain data integrity.”

The RIT gives users the ability to easily display operational layers. End users can search for an intersection or address similar to Google Maps. Layers can be turned on and off to view options such as county maintained roads, Board of Supervisors districts, subdivisions, parcels, public land ownership and municipal annexations. This application is not only accessible to MCDOT employees, but all county employees and a similar version was made available to the general public through the County website.

Asset Program Supervisor, Barbara Ritter, said, “The best part of the Road Information Tool is that it allows us to work as ‘One MCDOT’ where we can interact effectively and consistently with the public and find all this data in one central location.”

NACo will present MCDOT with an Achievement Award to recognize their excellence on this project on August 2, 2017. You can check out the award winning map here.
