Northern Parkway Improvements Reduce Travel Time in NW Valley

A booming Northwest Valley now has improved connections to help with traffic flow.

Once a road with one lane in each direction, Northern Parkway now has two lanes of free-flow traffic in each direction plus frontage roads.

These traffic improvements cutting drive time for commuters in the Northwest Valley are just one part of the Northern Parkway Program.

The Northern Parkway Program includes nine miles of Northern Avenue traffic improvements between Loop 303 and Loop 101:

  • Widening of Northern Avenue
  • Overpasses
  • Agua Fria Bridge
  • Street network improvements
  • 5 miles of Roadway with two lanes of free-flow traffic in each direction
  • Added frontage roads from Dysart to El Mirage Road

“This is a true partnership that allows us to provide regional connections,” said Maricopa County Supervisor Clint Hickman, District 4. “Maricopa County is one of the fastest growing counties in the country, and the Northwest Valley is major area of that growth. The Northern Parkway Program allows for us to have in place the proper infrastructure for current and future commuters in this region.”

Maricopa County is working with the Arizona Department of Transportation, Maricopa Association of Governments, Flood Control District of Maricopa County, Luke Air Force Base, the City of El Mirage, City of Peoria, and City of Glendale to make this happen.

“The overpasses in El Mirage in addition to the other traffic improvements on Northern Avenue are crucial for not only commuters in the area, but also for economic development,” said El Mirage Mayor Alexis Hermosillo. “We expect business will continue to boom in the area because of these traffic improvements.”

The goal is for Northern Parkway to accommodate current and future commuters alike.

“In keeping with our mission to provide connections that improve people’s lives, we look forward to being able to provide the east to west route needed in the Northwest Valley for present and future commuters,” said Maricopa County Department of Transportation Director Jennifer Toth.
