Downtown Precinct’s Justice of the Peace, Jimmie Hernandez, announced his retirement, effective May 12, 2017. The vacancy will be filled by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.

The selection process is as follows:
The appointee must be, like Hernandez, a Democrat and live in the Downtown Justice Precinct. The appointee must be a registered Arizona voter and understand the English language. A Justice of the Peace is not required to be an attorney. The appointee will serve out the unexpired term through 2018. The next elections for the position will be the primary and general elections in 2018.
