Flu

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs.

Everyone 6 months and older should receive a seasonal flu vaccine.

COVID-19

COVID-19 can be very contagious and spreads quickly. Most people with COVID-19 have mild symptoms, but some people become severely ill.

Everyone 6 months and older should receive an updated COVID-19 vaccine.

RSV

RSV usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious, especially for babies and older adults.

Get Vaccinated

Get a yearly flu vaccine and an updated COVID-19 vaccine. Certain groups should also get vaccinated against RSV after speaking with their healthcare provider.

Everyday Actions to Prevent Infection

  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with viruses that cause flu.
  • Consider wearing a mask if you are at high risk and respiratory viruses are widespread in your community.

The signs and symptoms of flu, COVID-19, and RSV are similar and can make it difficult to tell which you have.

Prescription antiviral treatments for COVID-19 and for flu are widely available and can lower your risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death if they are started soon after you become infected. 

Treatment for RSV is supportive care, as there is no effective antiviral for RSV at this time.
