Solid Waste - Permitting
An operating permit must be obtained from the Solid Waste Program for:
- Bio-hazardous Medical Waste Transportation Vehicles
- Chemical Toilets
- Construction Debris Landfills
- Non-Hazardous Liquid Waste (NHLW) Transportation Vehicles
- Non-hazardous Solid Waste (NHSW) Transportation Vehicles
- Portable Restroom Units
- Portable Waste Holding Tanks
- Potable Water Transportation (hauling)
- Refuse Containers included in a Refuse Collection Frequency Variance Plan
Vehicles
Vehicles used for the collection and transportation of non-hazardous solid waste (NHSW) must obtain a permit to operate. In order to qualify for a permit, the vehicle must be inspected and comply with the regulations listed in Chapter II, Section 5 of the Maricopa County Environmental Health Code.
Vehicles used for the collection and transportation of non-hazardous liquid waste (NHLW) must obtain a permit to operate. In order to qualify for a permit, the vehicle must be inspected and comply with the regulations listed in Chapter II, Section 7 of the Maricopa County Environmental Health Code.
Vehicles used for the collection and transportation of bio-hazardous medical waste must obtain a permit to operate. In order to qualify for a permit, the vehicle must be inspected and comply with the regulations listed in Chapter II, Section 10 of the Maricopa County Environmental Health Code.
Vehicles hauling water for drinking or "potable" uses must be operated with a permit. In order to qualify for a permit, the vehicle must be inspected and must comply with all regulations listed in Chapter V, Section 2 of the Maricopa County Environmental Health Code and Title 18, Chapter 4, Section 125 of the Arizona Administrative Code.
Refuse Containers
Refuse containers included in a refuse collection frequency variance plan must be permitted. In order to qualify for a permit, the container must be inspected and comply with the regulations listed in Chapter II, Section 5 of the Maricopa County Environmental Health Code.
Restrooms
Chemical toilets, portable restroom units and portable waste holding tanks made available for use must be permitted. In order to qualify for a permit, the toilet must be inspected and comply with the regulations listed in Chapter II, Section 6 of the Maricopa County Environmental Health Code.
Construction Debris
Landfills used for the disposal of construction debris must obtain a permit to operate. In order to qualify for a permit, the landfill must be inspected and comply with the regulations listed in Chapter II, Section 4 of the Maricopa County Environmental Health Code.
Closure of a Permit
Please contact the Solid Waste Program to obtain additional information on how to close a non-hazardous solid waste (NHSW), non-hazardous liquid waste (NHLW) or bio-hazardous medical waste transportation vehicle, refuse collection frequency variance plan, chemical toilet or construction debris landfill operating permit.
