The Air Monitoring division maintains an extensive ambient air monitoring network within the borders of Maricopa County.
Purpose
The purpose of the monitoring network is to sample air pollution in a variety of settings and provide real-time data to the public. Data are used to assess health and welfare effects and determine sources of air pollution.
Measurements and Objectives
The network's design is based on three basic monitoring objectives, three site types, and five spatial measuring scales. Additional items considered when determining the feasibility of the network's design are:
- Accessibility to site
- Availability of power
- Fiscal and personnel resources
- Geographic location
- Security
Representative Samples
Since it is physically and fiscally impossible to monitor the air in every location, representative samples must be obtained. These samples are determined by using the monitoring objectives and the spatial measurement scales. The network must be dynamic enough to maintain a current representative sample of the air quality.
Reliable and Relevant Data
Air quality issues such as eight-hour ozone non-attainment boundaries and permits for new sources are diverse and controversial subjects for the citizens of the County. With its robust air monitoring network and mobile monitoring tools, the department strives to provide the most reliable and relevant air monitoring data to the public.
